Salon Software vs POS: What's the Difference?

The Klippa Team · 26 May 2026 · 5 min read

"Do I need a POS or salon software?" is one of the most common questions from salon owners setting up — and the answer is often "the software, which includes the POS." The two terms overlap, which is exactly why they're confusing. Here's a plain-English breakdown.

What a POS actually does

A point-of-sale (POS) system handles the transaction: ringing up a service or product, taking card or cash, splitting payments, adding a tip, and printing or emailing a receipt. A standalone POS is great at checkout — but on its own it doesn't know who's booked in tomorrow, which clients are overdue, or how much commission each stylist earned this month.

What salon software adds

Salon software is the whole operating system for your business. It includes a POS, but wraps it in the things a salon lives on: online booking, a calendar, client records with history and formulas, automated reminders, deposits and no-show protection, staff rosters and commissions, marketing, and reporting.

In other words, a POS answers "how do I get paid for this sale?" while salon software answers "how do I run the whole salon?" — including the sale.

Where the overlap causes confusion

Many generic POS products now bolt on basic appointment booking, and many salon platforms include a full POS. So you can technically take bookings from a POS-first tool, or take payments from a booking-first tool. The question isn't whether a product can do both — it's which job it was built around.

A POS-first tool tends to be excellent at payments and lighter on salon-specific features like colour formulas, per-stylist commissions or rebooking automation. A salon-first platform treats those as core.

Which do you need?

If you only ever sell retail over a counter, a simple POS is fine. But if you take appointments, want to cut no-shows, keep client history, and pay staff commissions, you need salon software — and you'll get a POS as part of it, so you're not paying for or juggling two systems.

For most hair, beauty and barber businesses, an all-in-one salon platform is both cheaper and simpler than a separate POS plus a booking tool plus a reminders app.
